Mr. Arthur Goes To China!

It may have gone all but unnoticed in the local press, but a Barbados delegation headed by the Prime Minister is in China this week.

China pledges reciprocal co-op with Barbados

Wen told visiting Prime Minister of Barbados Owen Arthur that China will provide assistance to Barbados and encourage more Chinese enterprises to invest in the Caribbean country.    The two countries should expand exchanges in such fields as trade, finance, agriculture and tourism, said Wen.    China has listed Barbados as one of designated destinations for Chinese tourists.

Given the history with the US, particularly the most recent move to punish  us for not agreeing to exempt their soldiers from the international war crimes court. It’s in our interest to foster a relationship with China. Also to conclude a double taxation agreement with the Chinese Government will allow us to further our strategy of becoming a global financial centre. There is also the theoretical possibility of Chinese visitors. However how this will be a reality without air links remains to be seen.

Of course China gets another vote against Taiwan, and what else?

  1. China gets another foot in America’s back yard that’s what it gets. It also gets another potential ally in matters on the world stage. Goes back to the whole “rising superpower” bit.
